SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER FILMING
Underwater Filming
Professional marine cinematography with certified dive teams across Hungary.
Underwater filming captures imagery beneath the water's surface using specialized waterproof camera housings, lighting systems, and safety protocols. Hungary is landlocked but rich in water locations: Lake Balaton (Central Europe's largest lake), the Danube and Tisza rivers, and the world's largest thermal lake at Hévíz, alongside studio tank facilities at Korda and Origo in Budapest.
We coordinate operations with certified Hungarian dive teams, source cinema-grade waterproof equipment, and manage permits through the National Transport Authority and regional water authorities. Our team handles logistics for Lake Balaton shoots, Danube filming through Budapest, thermal lake work at Hévíz, and controlled tank scenes at Korda and Origo Studios — facilities that have hosted Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and The Witcher.

Certified dive crews across Hungary's lakes, rivers, thermal springs and underground karst
Here is how this works in practice. Hungarian underwater filming runs the gamut from temperate-summer lake work to year-round thermal springs to subterranean karst. And we route dive crews, surface support and cinema-grade housings through a vendor stack purpose-built for each envelope. Lake Balaton anchors the temperate work, with 77 kilometres of length and the Tihany peninsula's UNESCO-protected calcic shoreline delivering visibility windows from May through September. The Danube through Budapest provides cinematic urban-river sequences with the Chain, Liberty and Margaret Bridges overhead, while the Tisza River's slower-today's eastern channels suit hide-work and species cinematography.
Here is the short of it. Hévíz thermal lake. Europe's largest natural thermal lake — holds a steady twenty-six degrees year-round and supports a unique submerged floral-microbial column we frame for science and travel docs. Aggtelek Karst's Baradla Cave system carries an underground UNESCO river through 25 kilometres of subterranean passage, with dark-water exploration sequences needing helmet-mounted lighting rigs and rebreather support. SeaCam housings carry ARRI Alexa Mini LF bodies, Gates for RED V-Raptor and Sony Venice 2 packages, GoPro Hero 12 Black for supplementary coverage, and REDPort Halo monitoring. Sourced through Pannonia Underwater, Aquatic Hungary and the Hungarian Diving Association vendor network.
Here is the breakdown. Permit chains need parallel routing through multiple authorities depending on water body and depth. The Magyar Tájvédelem nature-conservancy authority covers national-park waters at Aggtelek, Bükk, Balaton-felvidéki and Hortobágy, with ranger-coordination lead times of three to four weeks standard. The National Transport Authority handles vessel charters on the Danube, Tisza and Lake Balaton plus dive-sites authorisations. Regional water authorities clear river-bank dive operations, while the National Heritage Protection Office handles Bay of Bakony underwater archaeology and any work approaching the submerged Roman-period bridge remains.
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Tank work for actor-water sequences stages at Origo Studios (eight stages including water-tank site), Korda Studios Etyek (Europe's largest purpose-built studio, six stages up to 3,700m² with water skill) and Stern Studios, all delivering controlled supplementary coverage that has supported Blade Runner 2049, Dune, The Witcher and dozens of major global productions. The 30% Hungarian Film Tax Rebate (one of Europe's most competitive rebates) applies to qualifying dive-unit spend with HNFF certification. Plus ONYF plus Magyar Államkincstár workplace insurance covers dive-crew operations to EU standards.
FAQ
Underwater Expertise
What cameras can you use underwater?
We operate professional underwater housings for cinema cameras including RED, ARRI, and Sony systems. We match camera and housing combinations to your resolution, frame rate, and image quality requirements.
Do you provide certified dive teams?
Yes, all our underwater crews are certified commercial divers with film production experience in Hungarian lakes, rivers, and tank facilities. Teams include underwater cinematographers, focus pullers, safety divers, and dive supervisors as required.
Can you film in pools and tanks?
Yes — Budapest's Korda and Origo Studios offer purpose-built tank and stage facilities used by major Hollywood productions, alongside swimming pools and additional studio water environments. These controlled settings are ideal for actor work, product shots, and sequences requiring precise control.
What about actor safety underwater?
Actor safety is paramount. We provide safety divers, breathing apparatus for extended takes, pre-shoot training, and clear communication systems. Non-diving actors can achieve impressive underwater shots with proper support.
Where can you film in Hungary?
As a landlocked country, we focus on lakes, rivers, and tanks. Lake Balaton offers warm, shallow water environments, the Danube provides cinematic urban river shots through Budapest, the thermal lake at Hévíz delivers a unique warm-water setting, and Korda and Origo Studios offer fully controlled tank conditions. Permits are arranged through the National Transport Authority and regional water authorities.
How do you handle underwater communication?
We use professional underwater communication systems including through-water comms for diver coordination and surface-to-diver links. Directors can communicate with underwater crews and monitor shots in real-time.
