Film production in Hungary

Why Film in Hungary?

Hungary offers an extraordinary variety of filming locations—from the grand Parliament and Buda Castle to world-class studios like Korda and Origo, thermal baths, the Danube Bend, and the vast Great Hungarian Plain. Budapest alone provides one of Europe's most sought-after urban filming environments.

A rich mix of geography, culture, and infrastructure makes Hungary one of the industry's most versatile destinations. The 30% tax rebate (extendable to 37.5%), experienced crews, and advanced studio facilities support productions of every scale. The incentive has been extended through 2030.

Historical Sites

UNESCO sites including Budapest's Danube banks, Hollókő village, Tokaj wine region, and the Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs suit prestige productions.

World-Class Studios

Korda Studios and Origo Film Studios have hosted Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and The Witcher — Europe's top production infrastructure.

Modern Cities

Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, and Pecs offer contemporary architecture, vibrant street life, and diverse urban backdrops.

Diverse Landscapes

Lake Balaton shores, the Danube Bend, Tokaj vineyards, and Hortobágy steppes deliver multiple looks within easy reach of Budapest.

Incentives and Rebates for Filmmakers

Hungary delivers exceptional value as your filming destination through established locations, experienced crews, and comprehensive financial incentives. Government-backed rebate programs reduce operational costs across feature films, television, and commercial content.

You gain immediate budget relief through structured rebate systems for domestic and international productions, keeping creative vision intact while optimising spend.

Rebate for International Productions

The Tax Rebate for International Productions (film incentive) Hungary's film tax rebate delivers 30% on qualifying Hungarian expenditure—extendable to 37.5% when eligible non-Hungarian costs (up to 25% of the budget) are included. It covers crew compensation, equipment procurement, and operational costs for features, series, documentaries, animation, and post-production. The incentive has been extended through 2030.

Eligibility and Application Process

Productions must register with the National Film Office (NFO) and pass a cultural test. The NFI (National Film Institute) manages the rebate fund. Expect processing of approximately 50–90 days from application to payment. Detailed budgets, schedules, and cultural test documentation are required. Partnering with experienced Hungarian production services keeps submissions compliant and on schedule.

Additional Regional Incentives

Hungary's 30% rebate (up to 37.5%) is one of the most competitive in Europe. Combined with low production costs and world-class studio facilities, strategic planning aligns locations with financial objectives for maximum budget impact.

Film Permits in Hungary

Hungary has a clear, well-established permit framework managed through the NFI Location Office. Permit applications must be filed at least 5 working days before the shoot (2 working days for expedited procedure). In Budapest, a separate application is required for each district. We handle all permissions so your production stays on track.

Standard Permits (5 working days)

Small crews with handheld gear in public spaces. Administrative fee: HUF 50,000.

Expedited Permits (2 working days)

Fast-track for urgent shoots. Administrative fee: HUF 130,000.

Complex Permits (5+ working days)

Road closures, traffic control, bridge filming, Castle District, and multi-authority coordination. Longer processing when additional authorities are involved.

Key Permit Requirements

  • Production liability insurance
  • Detailed shooting schedule and location list
  • Equipment list and crew size details
  • District-level municipal approvals (separate per district in Budapest)
  • Property owner permissions for private locations

Visa Requirements for Film Crews

Hungary is part of the Schengen Area, making access straightforward. Visa type depends on length of stay and project scope; we plan applications early to keep approvals on time. Note: The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being phased in, with full implementation across all Schengen borders from April 2026, replacing passport stamps with digital registration.

EU/EEA Citizens

No visa or work permit required. Freedom to work throughout Hungary with valid ID or passport.

Film Crew Work Permit Exemption

Film production workers are exempt from the labour market test normally required for third-country nationals. Cast and crew working fewer than 183 days are not taxed in Hungary if they demonstrate tax residency elsewhere.

Schengen Visa Countries

90-day short-stay visa allows filming across all Schengen countries. Visa-exempt nationals (US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others) can enter for up to 90 days within 180 days but still require work authorisation for paid film work.
