Rebate for International Productions

The Tax Rebate for International Productions (film incentive) Hungary's film tax rebate delivers 30% on qualifying Hungarian expenditure—extendable to 37.5% when eligible non-Hungarian costs (up to 25% of the budget) are included. It covers crew compensation, equipment procurement, and operational costs for features, series, documentaries, animation, and post-production. The incentive has been extended through 2030.

Eligibility and Application Process

Productions must register with the National Film Office (NFO) and pass a cultural test. The NFI (National Film Institute) manages the rebate fund. Expect processing of approximately 50–90 days from application to payment. Detailed budgets, schedules, and cultural test documentation are required. Hungary has a clear, well-established permit framework managed through the NFI Location Office. Permit applications must be filed at least 5 working days before the shoot (2 working days for expedited procedure). In Budapest, a separate application is required for each district. Expedited Permits (2 working days)

Fast-track for urgent shoots. Administrative fee: HUF 130,000.

Complex Permits (5+ working days)

Road closures, traffic control, bridge filming, Castle District, and multi-authority coordination. Longer processing when additional authorities are involved.

Visa Requirements for Film Crews

Hungary is part of the Schengen Area, making access straightforward. Visa type depends on length of stay and project scope; we plan applications early to keep approvals on time. Note: The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being phased in, with full implementation across all Schengen borders from April 2026, replacing passport stamps with digital registration.

EU/EEA Citizens

No visa or work permit required. Freedom to work throughout Hungary with valid ID or passport.

Film Crew Work Permit Exemption

Film production workers are exempt from the labour market test normally required for third-country nationals. Cast and crew working fewer than 183 days are not taxed in Hungary if they demonstrate tax residency elsewhere.

Schengen Visa Countries

90-day short-stay visa allows filming across all Schengen countries. Visa-exempt nationals (US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others) can enter for up to 90 days within 180 days but still require work authorisation for paid film work.
