SCENE 01 / LOOK DEVELOPMENT
Look Development
Creative visual style development and LUT creation for distinctive cinematic aesthetics that define your production's unique identity.
Here is how this works in practice. Look development sets up the visual style and color aesthetic of a production before principal photography starts. Through testing with cameras, lenses, lighting, and LUTs, look development creates reference images and tech specs that guide the entire production toward a unified look.
Here is the short of it. We support look development by setting up camera tests, LUT creation, and joint work between your cinematographer and colorist. Our team arranges testing facilities and tech resources to make sure your production's visual look is defined, logged, and ready to guide steady image capture from day one.

FilmLight Daylight LUT design at Mafilm Color, Pannonia Post, and Origo Post for ARRI Alexa 35 and Sony Venice 2 shoots
Here is how this works in practice. Look development for Hungarian shoots runs through the colour-science suites at Mafilm Color, Pannonia Post. Plus Origo Post, where FilmLight Daylight and DaVinci Resolve Advanced are used on-set to author camera LUTs before principal photography starts. We set up look-development sessions during pre-production with our partner colourists. Tamás Sas, Péter Sebök, and Tibor Sárosi all run dedicated look-dev suites with calibrated Sony BVM-HX310 reference monitors and Dolby Vision HDR mastering pipelines. And we build tech and creative LUTs for the ARRI Alexa 35, Sony Venice 2.
Plus the Atlas Orion anamorphic-lens packages that Greig Fraser used on the Origo Budapest portions of Dune Part Two. Each look is authored against the source camera's native gamut (ARRI Wide Gamut 4 / LogC4, S-Gamut3.Cine / S-Log3) and rendered to Rec.709, Rec.2100 PQ for HDR10, HDR10+, HLG. Plus Dolby Vision deliveries, with the same node tree carried forward into the final grade so the on-set tracking matches the eventual master.
Our look-development conversations draw on the set up Hungarian colour grammar that global shoots reach for when they shoot in Budapest.
Here is the short of it. The Belle Époque period look of Mephisto (István Szabó / Lajos Koltai) for prestige drama, the desaturated handheld documentary register of Son of Saul (László Nemes / Mátyás Erdély) for trauma and confinement, the saffron-warm Belle Époque interiors of Sunset (Nemes / Erdély), the high-contrast monochrome of Werckmeister Harmonies (Béla Tarr / Fred Kelemen) for B&W work, the raw kitchen-sink palette of Pieces of a Woman (Kornél Mundruczó / Benjamin Loeb), and the amber-and-cyan dunescape Greig Fraser graded for Dune Part Two.
Here is the breakdown. We schedule camera tests at Origo, NFI Fót, or Korda Studios stages, manage the look-dev DIT cart, deliver .cube LUTs and Resolve / Baselight project files for dailies and on-set monitors, and write the look-development bible. Reference stills, scene-by-scene grading notes, lens charts, and OK'd skin-tone targets. So the DP, gaffer, production designer, and post colourist are working from a single document from day one through final DCP.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
When should we start look development?
Here is the breakdown. Ideally during pre-production. Early look development allows you to use tracking LUTs on set, make sure steady dailies, and align all departments on the visual direction. However, we can also develop looks during post-prod if needed.
What do you need to create a look?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. We work best with sample footage from your camera tests or early production, visual references (films, photographs, artwork), mood boards, and a discussion of your creative goals. The more context we have about your story and vision, the better we can serve your project.
How do LUTs work in production?
Here is how the picture comes together. We create tracking LUTs that can be applied to camera feeds and dailies, giving all on set a preview of the intended look. These tech LUTs are optimized for different display types and viewing conditions while preserving full dynamic range in your RAW footage.
Can you match a specific film or reference look?
Here is what we have to work with. We can analyze and recreate aesthetic qualities from references, though we develop unique interpretations rather than exact copies. Our goal is to know what you respond to in references and create a distinctive look that serves your specific story and footage.
