On Location

Budapest Film Commission liaison plus regional permit shepherding nationwide

Here is how this works in practice. On-set location management in Hungary runs through the Budapest Film Commission for any shoot inside the capital's 23 districts and through the regional film commissions of Veszprém, Pécs, Eger, Debrecen and Szeged for everything outside. Our location managers carry direct relationships at every one of those commissions. Plus the heritage-zone neighbour liaison work that comes with shooting in the Buda Castle UNESCO district, the Andrássy Avenue UNESCO corridor, on Margaret Island, around Heroes' Square, along the Pest embankment with the Parliament in frame, or at the Hungarian State Opera.

Here is the short of it. Permit applications are filed at the Budapest Film Commission against district-state calendars. Plus traffic-management plans set up through BKK (Budapesti Közlekedési Központ) for street and bridge closures and through MÁV for any railway-corridor work. Daily contact sheets and on-site briefings run bilingually EN/HU as standard. Plus EN/DE added for shoots through the Sopron–Mosonmagyaróvár border belt where Austrian crews and neighbours are on the ground.

Here is the breakdown. Out of the city the location-management workload pivots into national-park and protected-landscape coordination. Plus our managers work directly with Hungarian Nature Conservancy (Magyar Tájvédelem) rangers and park directors at Hortobágy National Park UNESCO (the puszta plains and crane migration corridors), Aggtelek Karst UNESCO (the cave system on the Slovak border), Bükk National Park, and Balaton-felvidéki National Park around Tihany UNESCO and the Káli basin. Tokaj UNESCO wine-region shoots run through the regional wine-village mayors and the Magyar Államkincstár heritage office.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Hollókő UNESCO and Pécs UNESCO old-town work runs through the heritage-protection office and the village councils. On the safety side every site is wrapped against ONYF and Magyar Államkincstár workplace insurance, OEFI on-set health protocols, NÉBIH craft-table food safety, Hungarian Red Cross and St. John's Ambulance Hungary medical standby, with cold-weather protocols active December through February at -10°C and hot-weather protocols active July through August at 35°C+, all logged into the line producer's NFI 30% rebate evidence file as the shoot moves through wrap and restoration.

FAQ

Location Management Expertise

What does a location manager do during production?

The location manager oversees all aspects of your filming locations—from arrival to wrap. This includes supervising crew on site, managing access and parking, coordinating with property owners, monitoring permit compliance, controlling noise and crowd issues, and ensuring the location is restored properly.

Do you handle permits and permissions?

Yes, our location managers coordinate all filming permits across Hungarian regions. We work with Budapest Film Office for city permits, HNFF for tax rebate compliance, and district authorities for location access. ATA Carnet equipment import is also handled.

What about heritage sites and protected locations?

We specialize in managing complex locations including Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, and Danube-side heritage zones. Our managers coordinate with the Heritage Protection Office and understand the strict protocols for Budapest's most iconic filming locations.

How do you handle neighbor and community relations?

Our location managers proactively communicate with neighbors before filming, address concerns during production, and ensure positive relationships. This community approach protects your production and maintains good standing for future shoots.

Can you manage multiple locations simultaneously?

Yes, for productions with multiple locations, we provide location management teams coordinating across all sites. Our managers communicate to ensure consistent standards and seamless company moves between locations.

What are typical location fees?

Location fees in Hungary are highly competitive — a key advantage alongside the 30% tax rebate. Budapest public locations are managed through district governments, while heritage sites negotiate through relevant authorities. Our managers handle all negotiations in HUF.
