From Szabó's Mephisto and Nemes's Son of Saul to Béla Tarr's Sátántangó and Enyedi's On Body and Soul — feature production across the country that built Dune Part Two, Blade Runner 2049, The Martian, and Black Widow

Hungary's feature-film lineage is one of the most decorated in European cinema. The credits on our crew network reflect it. István Szabó won the 1981 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for Mephisto and took the 1985 Cannes Jury Prize for Colonel Redl. László Nemes won the 2015 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar plus the Cannes Grand Prix for Son of Saul and continued with Sunset (Venice 2018). Béla Tarr's Sátántangó (1994, seven hours), Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), and The Turin Horse (2011 Berlin Silver Bear) defined the slow-cinema canon.

Ildikó Enyedi took the 2017 Berlin Golden Bear for On Body and Soul after her Cannes Caméra d'Or for My Twentieth Century. Kornél Mundruczó's Pieces of a Woman won Vanessa Kirby the 2020 Venice Best Actress; his White God took 2014's Cannes Un Certain Regard. Bence Fliegauf's Just the Wind won the 2012 Berlin Silver Bear. Miklós Jancsó (The Red and the White, The Roundup) received the Cannes lifetime achievement. György Pálfi (Hukkle, Taxidermia) rounds the auteur tier. We set up feature production drawing on the same department-head community working out of Budapest, Korda Etyek, and Origo Studios.

Here is how this works in practice. On the runaway-production and rebates side, Hungary is among the world's top three destinations for global features specifically because NFI (Nemzeti Filmintézet) administers a 30 percent cash rebate on Hungarian-spend with no annual cap. Europe's highest, with up to 7.5 percent extra uplift on non-Hungarian spend. Recent stages-credit sheet.

Here is the short of it. Dune Part Two and Blade Runner 2049 (Villeneuve at Origo), The Martian (Ridley Scott at Korda), Munich (Spielberg), Atomic Blonde, Inferno (Tom Hanks), Black Widow (Marvel), Hellboy 2019, the Witcher Netflix S3, Halo, The Alienist, Strike Back, 47 Ronin, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Black Hawk Down, and the upcoming Mickey 17. Stages run through Korda Studios Etyek (Stage 6 at 6,000m² is the largest in Europe), Origo Studios Budapest (eight stages), Stern Studios, and Mafilm Fót.

Here is the breakdown. DPs include Vilmos Zsigmond (1977 Best Cinematography Oscar for Close Encounters, ASC Hall of Fame), László Kovács (Easy Rider), Mátyás Erdély (Nemes regular), Marcell Rév (Euphoria), and Lajos Koltai (Szabó regular). All rooted in the HSC Magyar Filmoperatőrök Társasága. Financing layers NFI rebate + Hungarian Film Foundation grants + bilateral co-pro treaties (HU-FR, HU-DE, HU-AT, HU-IT, HU-CA, HU-IL, HU-CN). Festival routes run Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, Sundance, Locarno, plus Hungarian Film Week, Magyar Mozgókép Fesztivál Tihany, and Cinefest Miskolc.

FAQ

Our Production Network

What is the Hungarian Tax Rebate for International Production (film incentive)?

film incentive offers a 40% tax rebate on qualifying Hungarian expenditure for international productions shooting in Hungary. This includes crew costs, equipment rental, post-production, and other eligible expenses. We help productions navigate eligibility requirements and application processes.

How do you support international co-productions?

We provide complete co-production support including treaty compliance guidance, Hungarian partner introductions, crew and equipment coordination, location services, and administrative support. Our team understands the requirements of bilateral treaties with major film-producing nations.

What crew sizes can you accommodate for feature films?

We support productions from small indie crews of 20-30 to major studio productions requiring 150+ crew members. Our network includes all key departments and we coordinate with Hungarian unions and guilds as required.

Can you handle period or costume productions?

Yes. Hungary offers exceptional resources for period productions including historical locations, costume houses, prop suppliers, and crews experienced in period filmmaking. We coordinate all specialty requirements for costume dramas.

What locations are available for feature film production?

Hungary offers extraordinary diversity: Budapest streetscapes, Danube Bend historic estates, Great Plain landscapes, Bükk and Mecsek mountain ranges, Lake Balaton shores, and industrial settings. We scout and secure locations across all 19 counties.

Do you provide post-production services for feature films?

We connect productions with Hungary's leading post-production facilities for editing, color grading, VFX, sound design, and mixing. Hungarian post houses work to international standards and many offer competitive rates enhanced by tax incentives.

Productions in Hungary that need this often pair it with Drama Series Production, Narrative Films & Web Series, and Documentary & Docuseries Production for full coverage. Most projects also draw on TV & Film Production Services and Educational & Explainer Video Production.
