Hungarian DPs from Mátyás Erdély and Lajos Koltai through the HSC and SZFE bench
Here is how this works in practice. Hungary's Director of Photography roster carries a uniquely concentrated cinematography heritage. Mátyás Erdély HSC earned a 2015 Best Cinematography Oscar nomination for Son of Saul (László Nemes' Cannes Grand Prix winner) and followed with Sunset in 2018, defining a generation of Hungarian arthouse practice with his 40mm close-following Steadicam style and Hawk V-Lite anamorphic preference. Marcell Rév shoots HBO's Euphoria, Malcolm & Marie, and The Idol out of Los Angeles while remaining anchored to the Budapest scene.
Here is the short of it. Lajos Koltai photographed every István Szabó feature including Sunshine, partial Evita and Bram Stoker's Dracula plates, The Russia House, and Being Julia, then earned his own Oscar nomination directing The Hungarian. Tamás Sas leads the domestic Hungarian Film Week awards bench. The Hollywood-emigré heritage runs through Vilmos Zsigmond (Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1977 Best Cinematography Oscar, ASC Hall of Fame) and László Kovács (Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Paper Moon, Ghostbusters). Both Hungarian-born, both ASC pillars. The HSC Magyar Filmoperatőrök Társasága has organized the local industry since 1969, with SZFE Budapest (founded 1865) and MOME feeding the camera-department pipeline.
Here is the breakdown. Engagements begin with a brief, reference deck, and budget envelope, then narrow to curated showreels and direct conversations before booking is locked. Our DPs are fluent across ARRI Alexa 35 and Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2. Plus RED V-Raptor 8K packages drawn from Pannonia Cine Service and Origo Film Group. Plus lens options spanning Atlas Orion anamorphics (the Dune Part Two look — Origo Budapest portions shot on this exact glass), Cooke S7/i, Angénieux Optimo zooms, ARRI Signature Primes, and Hawk V-Lite (the Erdély Son of Saul preference).
Here is what that looks like on the ground. First-AC and focus-puller crews come through HSC certified rosters and the Magyar Filmoperatőrök Szakszervezete. Plus the SZFE Budapest and MOME pipelines feeding camera departments through the inbound surge from Witcher Netflix S3, Black Widow, Hellboy 2019, Atomic Blonde, and Inferno at Origo and Korda Studios Etyek. Pre-production days cover shot lists, lens tests, and tech scouts across Buda Castle UNESCO heritage zones, Parliament, Andrássy Avenue, Lake Balaton, and Hortobágy puszta. Bilingual EN/HU joint work is standard with EN/DE common for Austrian and German co-productions, NMHH and HungaroControl coordination for aerial supplementary work runs through the same camera-department contract, and NAV ATA carnet handling clears imported gear cleanly.
FAQ
Our DP Network
What experience levels of DPs do you provide?
We offer DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and international broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project requirements.
How do you match DPs to projects?
We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.
What camera systems do your DPs work with?
Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production requirements and rental availability.
Do DPs come with their own equipment?
Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented equipment. We coordinate equipment sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-provided equipment.
Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Hungary?
Yes. We can source international DPs for shoots in Hungary, handling work permits and logistics. We also provide Hungarian DPs for international productions requiring local cinematography talent abroad.
What's included in DP day rates?
Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is typically billed separately. Equipment, camera assistants, and overtime are additional based on project scope.
